The Recent Rise in Homicide: An Analysis of Weekly Mortality Data, United States, 2018-2022

Between December 2017 and December 2022, firearm homicide increased by 54% while non-firearm homicide was stable. 27.8% of the eventual increase had already occurred by the time COVID-19 was declared a national emergency.

Traditional competencies taught in public health schools by themselves can only help so much to address the threat of new pathogens, the impact of climate change on health, or the role of global corporations in affecting health. Public health leaders must develop new skills to guide the systemic change necessary to improve human well-being.
