Emerging Technologies

As new systems and opportunities develop and policies around them adapt, RAND Australia is committed to exploring the potential uses, outcomes, and threats of emerging technologies.

Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy

Responsible AI and Autonomous Systems are areas of particular strength for RAND, with deep expertise is a range of relevant policy and technical skills. RAND Australia has undertaken several projects for Australian defence and government policymakers, ranging from organisational innovation research, to cost assurance, to understanding the impacts on the future of warfare. RAND also has a history of conducting research on safeguards, policy responses, and technical standards for emerging AI and related technologies.

Cyber

RAND Australia has a proven track record of providing cutting-edge cyber policy analysis for policymakers and legislators. This includes a range of technical and organisational analyses, as well as providing cost-assurance to cyber protection capabilities.

Space

RAND Australia’s strength is in providing objective and actionable analysis to help policymakers, primarily government organisations. RAND was an early leader in the field of space science, producing seminal works in the design, launch and operation of satellites in the 1940s and ‘50s. RAND Australia has performed cost-assurance tasks in order to help Defence prioritise investments in space capabilities.

Clean Energy

RAND Australia is deeply committed to advancing clean energy research. This is reflected by our current contributions to the International Clean Innovation Researcher Network (ICIRN) on integrating End of Life (EoL) solar panel waste into a circular economy model. These initiatives to facilitate collaborative research reflect RAND Australia's dedication to fostering sustainable practices and addressing pivotal challenges in global clean energy transitions.
