Media Call: RAND Experts Discuss What's Next for Syria

RAND experts will discuss fallout from the rapid ouster of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria during an hour-long media call on Tuesday, December 17. Topics will include Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other rebel groups; how the fall of al-Assad affects Russia and Iran; implications for U.S. interests in the region; U.S. air strikes and Israeli military action in the region; Syrian chemical weapons; the return of Syrian refugees; and broader regional and global considerations.

Who

  • Raphael Cohen, director of the Strategy and Doctrine Program of RAND Project Air Force and RAND senior political scientist. Cohen is an expert on defense strategy and force planning, Middle Eastern security issues, and civil-military relations.
  • Ryan Crocker, RAND Distinguished Chair in Diplomacy and Security and former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, and Lebanon
  • Karen Sudkamp, associate director, Infrastructure, Immigration, and Security Operations program of RAND's Homeland Security Research Division and former senior intelligence analyst for Middle East and counterterrorism issues at the Defense Intelligence Agency.
